Erythrocytes and Platelets

Under the electron microscope, erythrocytes appear as dumbbell-shaped cells. The high iron content of hemoglobin causes the red blood cell to appear very dark in EM images. A platelet is also visible in this image. It contains granules but no nucleus. Note the endothelial cells lining the capillary. (from yale.edu)
