Kayan women are most known for brass coils that they wear around their neck. They are first placed on girls when they are around 5 years old. A full set of neck rings weighs about 10 kilos (22 lbs) and are made from 3 separate coils. A full set has a wider coil near the shoulders with a small coil wrapped around it. Brass coils are also worn around the legs under the knees. These coils do not stretch the neck, rather, the coils push down the clavicle and compress the thoracic cage.
