X & Y Chromosomes

Scanning electron micrograph of X & Y chromosomes. Humans have 46 chromosomes in total: 23 inherited from the mother and 23 from the father. These sex chromosomes determine the individual’s gender. Males have an X sex chromosome  and a Y sex chromosome, and females have two X sex chromosomes.
